Making a guitar with José R.
José R. Luis, a twenty-year veteran of the craft,
offers intensive Private Apprenticeships in his shop. The classes take the
student through the actual process of creating a classical guitar from scratch
using raw materials. Eventually, the student should be walking out with a
guitar they constructed. No woodworking experience is necessary.
One on one: The student will be working under José’s
direct supervision every week for two hours. Classes are offered on Saturdays.
José has to work the classes around his yearly
commission schedule, so the number of slots is limited. Contact José for
$50 for two hours. Prices are subject to change. Contact
José R. Luis for current pricing. (Classes are offered in English or Spanish.)
The instructor will supply all the tools. The student shall supply all the
materials. If the instructor supplies the materials, the cost would be an
additional $400 to $600 or more, depending on materials and fittings selected. This
additional charge shall be paid in advance, prior to the start of the classes.
Luis’ shop is located in Tampa, a city in
Hillsborough County, on the west coast of the state of Florida.
